Adam Lloyd, Ph.D.
Everyone's journey follows a different path; mine includes the humbling experience of becoming paralyzed from the neck down and having to reimagine how I would live my life, including learning to type with a mouth-stick. That logistical adaptation and my love of writing have taken me far, ultimately leading me to find my calling as an English professor.
As a result of my own challenges and triumphs, I've been inspired to help others reach their greatest potential, no matter what stands in their way. When I work with you I will strive to understand your particular abilities, circumstance, and goals so that I can use our time together to most effectively meet your needs and to create a learning atmosphere that will enable you to thrive. Together, we will develop the tools and strategies that will empower you to be a successful writer on the project at hand and into the future.

Quadriplegic since a 1983 sports accident, Dr. Adam Lloyd has developed a philosophy of achieving success that involves facing challenges head-on: setting goals, embracing one's strengths, recognizing one's weaknesses, seeking help whenever necessary, and always staying positive. Adam applies this philosophy in his own life and uses it in his college classrooms, in one-on-one tutoring, and in his writing collaborations with professional organizations.
A member of the University of Maryland English Department faculty since 2011, Dr. Lloyd has extensive experience teaching academic writing, business writing, rhetorical theory, and multimodal composition.
His work in academia has been recognized by the University of Maryland's Center for Teaching Excellence and he is a recipient of the James A. Robinson Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching of Writing.
Dr. Lloyd was recently elected to his second consecutive term as a faculty senator in the University Senate, was appointed to the University Senate's Educational Affairs Committee (charged with oversight of the University's General Education Program) and, separately, as a member of the English Department's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility Committee.
Adam's dedication to his students and to the University goes beyond his time in the classroom. In an effort to further enrich the English Department's vibrancy, he designed a course, "Writing in the Wireless World," that helps students acquire rhetorical, design, and technical competence for composing/communicating through a variety of media in digital environments. In addition, he was the Founder and Editor of the English Department's first ever peer-reviewed academic journal of undergraduate composition, Interpolations: A Journal of First-Year Writing.
In addition to his primary vocation, Adam is a freelance travel writer with articles published in Cruise Travel Magazine, Cigar Aficionado, Abilities Magazine, Virginia Living, Rudy Maxa'sTraveler, & United Airline's Hemispheres, among others.
